"Green" News

This session I talk a little bit about "Green" Builders on the West Coast of Florida. Many communities have taken steps to explore new ideas and practices in ecologically friendly residential (and commercial) real estate development. Estimates state that four out of five people are interested in building or purchasing "green" homes.

Although this idea is not new the Florida Builders Coalition began with the belief that green building programs will be successful if there are clear and meaningful principles on which "green" qualifications are based. To this end builders are becoming "certified" in these principles which will minimize negative impacts on the community and natural environment.

Some features builders are using are: Recycled glass counter-tops, Energy Star appliances, Low-flow faucets, dual flush toilets, high efficiency HVAC systems, greywater re-use systems, zero VOC or low VOC paints & finishes, instant hot water systems, bamboo flooring and Florida native landscaping.

Some homeowners insurance companies are also giving discounts for green homes.

In future news I will discuss subjects such as Florida native landscaping, "green" products for the home, updating your existing home to go green, teaching children the importance of conserving resources and even how to have a "green" wedding!

The list of "certified"  "green" builders is growing each day so if you are thinking of moving to the West Coast of Florida and need further information on builders in your desired area, please contact me.
